This is one of the places where "hamster and gerbil" food can do the most damage. Gerbils have an instinct to gorge themselves on high fat foods...whereas hamsters will horde food in their bed for later consumption. Most commercial hamster/gerbil food is designed for HAMSTERS...and will contain a mix of sunflower seeds, peanuts...millet...oats...etc. Your gerbils...will eat out all of the sunflower seeds, peanuts...and pumpkin seeds first...and will only eat the millet, oats and green pellets when everything else is gone. If you feed your gerbils daily...you'll soon have plump gerbils in need of Gerbil Craig.
Since there's only ONE commercial gerbil only food on the market...and it's made in the UK...you're probably stuck with one of the brands like Kaytee...which is pretty decent for one of the cheaper brands. There isn't a lot of dust in the package...the seed is well mixed...and the last bag I bought smelled really fresh and was insect free. My black bear hamster Hershey loves this food. He always runs from the top of the cage, when he hears me filling his food bowl. I like how there is a lot of variety in this food, even though they are fatty foods in this diet. I like this brand of food for him, even though you get a little bag of food. It last a while, I will buy this food again, and also recommend this to anyone. |
