This review is from: Nature's Variety Canned Cat Food, Feline Instinct Duck Diet (Pack of 24 5.5 Ounce Cans) (Grocery) My 11 year old male cat became severely constipated and I had to bring him into the vet when he couldn't go at all after being on this food (I wanted to try a new brand to supplement his diet after the "Wellness" recall earlier this year because of low Thiamine levels). Not to mention he began to HATE this food after only a week.
My guess is that the 'clay' in this food is what caused him to get bound up so badly. :( After I put him back on his Wellness brand he was going every day again rather than only once a week (and that was with the help of a cat laxative his vet prescribed). The ingredients seemed wholesome and mostly high quality protein but something in this food definitely went terribly awry with my cat's digestive system. Perhaps this food is okay for younger cats but I'd caution folks to buy a couple cans before investing in this much cat food only to find out it's no good for your kitty (megacolon is a real fear especially for older cats). She generally eats just about any food but has a bad habit of throwing it up, but so far so good. Nature's Variety is one of the best foods available, so I'm thrilled that she's able to eat it AND keep it down! It's a bit more expensive but worth it for a healthy, happy cat (and mommy)! My cat generally likes duck and will fight me for any roast duck leftovers, but didn't take to this preparation for some reason. Sniffed it, pawed at it a little, and walked away. I purposefully left it in the dish overnight, but in the morning the food was still there and mostly intact. Too bad because the ingredients seemed ok and I am always looking to vary my cat's diet from the usual chicken/beef/salmon in a way that doesn't break the bank. |
